Along the scenic R62 route, between Oudtshoorn and Calitzdorp, lies Bella de Karoo on Andrieskraal, one of the most historic farms in the Klein Karoo with buildings dating back to the early 1800s. On an extremely hot day, we did the crazy thing to drive from Wilderness to Seweweekspoort. Bella de Karoo felt like an oasis .
It is one of these quirky farm stalls, and one of my favourites so far. We didn't have lunch there, but the coffee was just what the doctor ordered.
There are plenty of animals to keep you company. Some of the cats may join your party but don't you dare chase them from their favourite chair!
There is also Bella’s bar and entertainment area where you can relax and enjoy yourself. From Friday after-work drinks, to a friendly get-together, to watching sport with a couple of friends, there is no better place to unwind in good company (according to their website)! Unfortunately, we hadn't tried that either.
Of course, no Karoo farm stall is complete without the traditional "roosterkoek". What is roosterkoek you may ask? According to the website www.cooksister.com it is "literally grill cake – say 'roor-stir-cook' and try to roll those r's!) is the traditional bread to accompany a braai or BBQ." The roosterkoek are simply balls of bread dough cooked on a grid over the coals, and are best eaten piping hot and straight off the grill.
We shopped though! I bought rusks and a homebaked bread (or is it farmstall-baked bread?), which we had that night with our braai. Well worth the visit.
